How minerals are described
- Mineral Form: crystals on matrix means the crystals are still attached to the host rock they grew on; a crystal or crystal cluster is free of matrix; a geode is a hollow rock lined with crystals; a freeform or sphere is cut and polished; a cabochon is a stone polished with a domed top.
- Origin and Region: the country and, where known, the locality, such as Ametista do Sul in Brazil for amethyst. A named locality adds interest for collectors.
- Weight is given in grams or kilograms, and Objects tells you how many pieces are included.
What to check
Look at the dimensions as well as the weight: large geodes and spheres can weigh many kilograms, so plan where they will stand. Check photos for damaged crystal tips, which lower value on display specimens. Polished pieces are shaped by hand from natural stone, so colour and pattern vary. Some materials, such as dyed agate, are colour-enhanced; the description notes this where known.
Meteorites
Meteorites are priced by weight. Pallasites contain olivine crystals set in iron-nickel metal and are prized for their look when cut and polished. Keep iron meteorites dry, as they can rust.
Frequently asked questions
What does 'crystals on matrix' mean?
It means the crystals are still attached to the rock they naturally grew on, called the matrix. Collectors generally prefer specimens on matrix because they show how the mineral formed and look more natural on display. A loose single crystal or cluster without its host rock is described simply as a crystal or crystal cluster.
What is an amethyst geode?
An amethyst geode is a hollow volcanic rock whose inside is lined with purple quartz crystals. Many of the largest come from Ametista do Sul in southern Brazil and from Uruguay. They range from small halves to tall cathedral geodes weighing tens of kilograms, so always check the listed height and weight before ordering.
What is a pallasite meteorite?
A pallasite is a type of stony-iron meteorite made of olivine crystals embedded in iron-nickel metal. Cut and polished slices show golden-green crystals in shining metal, which makes them popular with collectors. Brenham and Sericho are well-known pallasites. Store them dry, as the metal can rust in humid conditions.
